uploading TV spots
Posted by Craig Sawchuk on February 21, 2009 at 10:14 pmI have to compress some TV spots to send to a regional Comcast. As an alternative to sending a Beta SP Master, they use a service called DGFastchannel to upload the spots to the cable distribution point. They are asking for an MPEG-2 Program Stream, 4:2:2 (MP@ML) 720×480; Audio MPEG-1, Layer2 384kb/sec stereo.
This doesn’t look like something I can do with Compressor — or am I wrong. If not can anyone suggest a workflow to make this happen?
Also does this indicate that the audio is wrapped with the video instead of a separate file like when you export to a DVD?
Thanks,
Craig Sawchuk

February 22, 2009 at 1:46 amYou need Episode form Telestream. The probelm is that DGFastchannel usually wants a certification process before uplaoding. If you are going to do this regularly, it’s worth it. If not, just send DGFastChannel a tape and they will do it for you and traffic the spots out as well.
Also, check the specs as my specs are for 720×512 (I know sounds weird) but that’s what they like.

February 22, 2009 at 3:03 amGood Sunday morning,
I think is time that Apple release new Presets for Compressor.
This could be done “at home” without spending almost 1000 bucks for Episode Pro.

February 22, 2009 at 4:48 pmHey Raf. It’s not just a preset, but more a codec. This is Mpeg2 @ 4:2:2 color space with embedded audio (a muxed program stream). You don’t need Episode Pro (as far as I know) but the regular version of Episode will work at half the price. It’s a small price to pay if you are uploading spots all the time and will save you the cost of messenger or overnight shipping and tape. It will pay for itself in a job maybe two.

February 22, 2009 at 7:54 pmOkay, just noticed something that I should have seen before (story of my life 🙂 Compressor has an MPEG-2 Program Stream with the right kind of multiplexed audio. I can set the bit rate to max 25 Mb/sec. However it doesn’t say anywhere that it’s 4:2:2 (MP@ML). The spec that they sent Friday has 720×480. Rather not spend an extra $500 right now if I can avoid it. Don’t know how much I’ll do this in the future…

It’s not.

Then send DGFastchannel a tape and save yourself the trouble.

You are right Jeremy.
I just wonted to point out that FCS is ready to work with high data rate 422 MPEG-2.
XDCAM HD 422 is already an easy setup in FC.

February 23, 2009 at 4:26 pmSo, could I have compressed it XDCam to get the result that they were looking for?

February 23, 2009 at 4:33 pmI don’t think so. It’s a different beast. They aren’t asking for XDCam MXF files, they are asking for MPEG218MB/sec MPEG2 files with an mpg extension. They have their own spec and Episode supports it, Compressor does not.
Rafael, I understand you concern, but DGFC does not want XDCam material.

thats odd, because I created a spot to DGS just a month ago to those
specs (just not 4:2:2) from compressor and it passed QC with flying colors.
