I am currently having some problems with the “drop box” approval process for DG FastChannel. Is there anyone that has had success with their Avid export settings and encoding to mpeg2?

I am currently using Avid MC Adr HD version 2.2.7. My workflow is to export from avid and encode to mpeg2 using the DG FastChannel recommended encoder (MainConcept MPEG Encoder). The problem lies in resizing the video to the required 720 x 512. No matter what settings I use, the tests are rejected due to tiling in the video (probably due to resizing from 486 to 512).

I’ve tried several Avid export settings and codecs… 486, 480, 540, AvidDV, Avid 1:1x, and so on. All come close to approval, but there still is tiling in the video. My best luck has been with having Avid resize to 512, but still rejected (tiling).

Has anyone out there had a successful upload approval from Avid at 512?

I don’t think you should be resizing to meet the DG 512 spec. I think you need to create black (think of it as letter box on the top only). I haven’t uploaded to DG since they’ve changed from 480 to 512 but this is what people I know have found when they attempted upload and got comments back from DG.

    Thanks for responding Craig.

I agree that adding black to the top is the way to approach this. I had seen other posts about it, but was afraid that my video would be low in the framing. It wasn’t until they send a tape of my tests did I realize that, in the end, they actually “chop” off the extra scan lines at the top. I had tall people on all the tests where I was resizing to 512. Maybe DG was giving them more soul?

It will be interesting to see what it does to Closed Caption information. I will post my results once I am certified for Drop Box.

Please post if anyone else has ideas/solutions, the tests continue…
