Upgrading my FCP system…need advice
I have an older model Mac Pro (See specs below) and need to add an internal drive. This model is a 2008 and had shipped with 320GB. I tend to run outta space quickly with my FCP setup. I use Lacie rugged 500GB drives to store a lot of my video (1 for active and 1 for archived projects) but would rather use them for archiving and Time Machine only while keeping my active stuff on the internal. I was looking at a 1TB SATA drive from B&H for $139 but the specs say it’s for the early 2010 models. I could use some advice on the best drives for my system. I have gone thru 3 different external drives for my Time Machine (all iomega). Would love to know what other editors are doing for their set ups. Money is an issue and I know I can spend a lot but I’m trying to figure out the minimal I can get away with to solve my data issues. I just burned out yet another 500GB iomega which was my Time Machine drive….second in 2 years. I’m doing ok with 2GB of RAM and will consider upgrading that at a later date.

It is not recommended to have FCP media on the system drive. By internal do you mean the system drive or do you want to add an additional internal for media?

You can drop ANY modern Sata drive in your mac.

Yes I mean inside the system. I have 3 empty slots for up to 1TB each. I’ve not heard that this is not good for FCP. In fact, I’ve heard just the opposite. I don’t see the prob as long as it’s 7200rpm. One of my work facilities works this way. Their externals are CalDigit VRs. Can’t afford those for my personal system but figured an extra TB added to my system would help. You don’t agree?

Thanks Chris. Then I will assume the early 2010 model will do fine in my 2008.

System drive has the OS and FCP software. Do not use this drive for media. Yes to adding internal drives into a MacPro. I have used my internal slots to setup a three drive RAID using 1.5TB drives. It is fast enough to run HD uncompressed.

One last question, Michael….do you have a preference of manufacturer for the internals? The 1TB I’m considering is Apple. There is also a 1.5 from Western Digital for about $20 more.

Hitachi 7200 RPM SATA drives are used in almost all of the high-end RAIDs. They are quite robust. I have forty or fifty Hitachi SATA drives and have had just one failure in six and half years.
