Upgrading from Sony HVRZ1U (at last). What to buy next?
Hello all:
I am finally upgrading from my trusty (but ancient) Sony HVR-Z1U HDV camcorder.
Hooray!
I want to spend around $6,000 for a new camera. I want a camera to record direct to drive (no more tape please). It would be great if one could capture in ProRes as well as HDV.
So in short I’m looking for recommendations. I shoot a variety of subjects – I work a lot with kids and educational themed projects… so something that is robust and has easy access to menus is a plus as I shoot on the fly a lot.
I also do a lot of corporate gigs (especially research videos and docs).
So I need a camera that is versatile, robust, easy/fast to access and under or around $6,000.
Something with a big internal drive is also a plus (I shoot lots of one-hour plus interviews).
I’ve always had good luck with Sony but I also like Canon. Not opposed to Panasonic.
Please chime in… all thoughts are welcome.

So the Canon XF300 Camcorder it is then. $6,499 from B&H. Thanks for all the advice and input.
