Upgraded Mac OS to Catalina and had to upgrade FCPX
Finally updated my MacBook Pro to Catalina OS (I work in documentaries and this was first good time to update since 2016) and had to update to FCPX 10.4.8 because of the OS update.
FCPX is warning me it has to update my Librairies and then I won’t be able to use them with earlier versions.
I can backup the Librairies (pretty huge files) prior to updating, but i’d like to know if anyone else has gone through this process and if things worked out well before I fully commit to Catalina and FCPX 10.4.8.

Hi Anne. It’s usually a good idea to backup both the FCPX application itself and your libraries before doing an upgrade like this, just in case. We leave our media in place (not stored within the library) so the library files are not very large. If it were me I’d back them up, but I’m paranoid. After you successfully update, open and confirm each library is good, you can delete the old library to regain some storage space. Maybe back each library up one at a time and do the update, then delete the old one if you don’t have enough space to do them all at once.

Extremely helpful response, I just wish I has posted my question a day earlier since I didn’t think to backup my older version of the FCPX software
I’ll follow the steps you mention (and in the very clear video tutorial) to back up my Libraries until I’m sure the update is working for me.

I’ve had great success with over 50 Libraries to date.
I had a slew of clients and personal to upgrade when I moved over to the new Mac Pro.
Plug-ins are all you need to worry about.
Eventually, I deleted a lot since I hardly use them.
Of note, I’ve moved projects as far back as 2011 and no issues. -

It all depends on your comfort level with upgrading.
I’ve had my share of total fails but have not with FCPX Libraries.
If you have a spare drive I would make a copy of your high-level projects.
We should all be doing that no matter what your up too 🙂
