So…I am aware of the $139 upgrade price for Vegas Pro 10, and I am thinking about purchasing it. Then I counter that with Pro 8 is doing fine, and I can still use the version of Excalibur I own and avoid another upgrade price, and I am using Deshaker, and they get the job done. Are those of you who have jumped to Pro 9 or 10 from Pro 8 glad that you did? Jim

    Here are somethings to consider:

Do you edit video professionally with Vegas Pro? If yes, you are taking a big risk staying on Vegas Pro 8 because it is unsupported and if run into a bug that keeps you from delivering a project on time you are risking your reputation with your clients because you have no support from Sony.

Do you use a new camera that shoots AVCHD or any form of AVC/h.264? (e.g., Canon 5D/7D) If yes, Vegas Pro 10 edits these new formats a lot easier than Vegas Pro 8 which was written before a lot of these new formats came out.

Do you use 3rd party plug-ins in your work? Vegas Pro 10 now uses the OpenFX API which opens up a whole new set of high quality plug-ins like Boris Continuum Complete (BCC7) which can do things in Vegas that formerly could only be done in packages like After Effects.

If, however, you do this as a hobby and Vegas Pro 8 is working fine for you… then there is no need to upgrade.

Excalibur 6 will also work fine in Vegas Pro 10 as well as Vegas Pro 8.

Thanks, John. I am heavily leaning to the upgrade. Jim

I upgraded yesterday from 8 to 10 and regret it already. I mainly create video for the web so I use mp4 a lot. I have found that using identical files, with identical settings on the same computer results in 10 taking more than twice as long to render as 8. This is true for both SD and HD files. AVI is about the same rendering time. But doubling my render times was not my reason to upgrade.

Customer service said I should have downloaded the test version and tried it first because once I paid, I owned it no matter how badly it performed. That will teach me for every again trusting Sony.

I am sorry it does not appear like the update is helping you. I downloaded the trial, and rendered a project that had taken me about 4 hours or so in Vegas Pro 8. In Pro 10 it took one hour 33 minutes, considerably less. I noticed that the stabilization worked really well. I am tempted to get the update.

Dick, your workflow must be much different than mine. I’m running the trial version of 10, and my rendering is about the same, maybe even faster, than with 9. I also render to the web, MP4, AVI too.

What OS are you using? If you are running 8, I’m wondering if you are using Vista or XP? It could be some kind of incompatability with a .NET component, for example.

I’m on W7, 8 GBs RAM, and fast hard drives. i7 machine.

Then again, if you are doing lots of graphics and efx, you likely could be experiencing something I’m not. My tests are of very rudimentary kinds of work. Documentary.
