Okay I am confused and even the guy at Mac Mall is confused about how to upgrade from 4.5

We have Final Cut 4.5 Production Suite running on our G5 dual and G4. We would like to upgrade to 5.1 Production Studio.

I see that on the apple store you can upgrade 5.1 from 1,2, and 3. If you want to upgrade from 4.5 Apple wants your 4.5 Install disk sent back to them.

We are not prepared to turn in our install of 4.5 since we are in mid project on a few things and might have to downgrade. Plus we paid for it.

So if i buy the 5.1 upgrade for 1,2,3 will I be able to install it on our machines running 4.5? Or do I have to purchase the whole Production Studio over again? This is really confusing.

    Thanks!

Buy the cross-grade and send in your disks. There was a recent thread here about Apple’s response time – most got their new disks in a week or so. Make backup copies if you are worried about something happening in transit.

Also, be aware that 5.1 projects are not backwards compatible with 4.5. So save backups of your 4.5 projects if you want to be able to ‘downgrade’.

Have to mail your disks in, sorry.

    Worth it though 🙂

Do the Cross Grade. You get the entire suite for $199.

Before installing 5.1, rename Final Cut Pro 4.5. This will allow you to use v4.5 if you need to.

    Okay,

This kinda ticks me off. I have paid for this disc. I might have to downconvert the machine back to 4.5 since we are using a Black Magic capture card and they do not want us to upgrade in the middle of a project but we have to since we have a new quick client project to do on the machine using the Panasonic P2 cards and we have to have 5.1 to do that.

Honestly this type of business pratice may find me at AVID’s door. The guy at Apple said that you have to prove you have 4.5 in order to upgrade. Huh? I bought 4.5 through apple. Is my sales reciept and info not enough?

I guess that I will have to copy it and send it in, but I don’t need the hassle of this. My god. I don’t care if it saves me a few hundred bucks. We are wasting so much time dealing with it.
