Upgrade Mojave to Catalina for FCPX?
Posted by Ken Bennett on September 22, 2020 at 10:26 pmI know Catalina will not run 32bit programs, so that isn’t an issue. But I’ve heard a lot of negative feedback on Catalina. Apple shows a rating 2.8 out of 5. So what are the pros and cons as far as running FCPX 10.4.9, Motion 5.4.6 and Affinity as well as all the basic Apple programs that come installed?

September 22, 2020 at 11:32 pmI have not yet run FCPX, Motion, etc. under Catalina. However, I have read in Tip #1017 in “The Inside Tips” newsletter of two problems in FCPX 10.4.9 that may affect your decision:
1. You can no longer export Chapter Markers (File > Share).
2. Voiceover no longer works.
See https://www.theinsidetips.com/tip-1017-chapter-marker-export-option-missing/
Other Apple apps as well as Microsoft Office 365 seem to be OK in Catalina, ver. 10.15.6.

September 23, 2020 at 4:03 amI don’t know about others, but it’s been beachball city since I did that update in FCP X.

September 23, 2020 at 5:30 amMy personal experience has not been good with Catalina or 10.4.9. After upgrading both I was unable to see .r3d footage in the viewer and none of the new proxy options worked.
I had to roll my machine back to Mojave and 10.4.8 in order to get things correct and I also had to recreate one library I had “upgraded” to work with 10.4.9.
Buggy. Buggy. Buggy. has been my personal experience thus far, which I must say is not at all the norm.
My advice is wait – unless you are starting from scratch on a brand new Mac.

September 23, 2020 at 1:47 pmI did a fresh install of Catalina before diving into FCPX.
I am running 10.4.8 on a few and 10.4.9 on my 2019 Mac Pro with no problems.
Well except for a few defunct freebie plug-ins.

September 23, 2020 at 2:42 pmIssues have been reported from people using Sony cameras, especially the FS9, not importing. I have an FS5 and have had trouble exporting even though my footage was imported a long time ago. Can’t be sure it’s a FCPX problem.
Best advice is not to upgrade when in the middle of an edit. And to have Time Machine, so you can go back to Mojave if problems arise.

September 23, 2020 at 5:48 pmCatalyst Browse has been a crash fest also lately aside from imports to X.

September 24, 2020 at 4:59 pmRED footage is fine once you install the latest Apple Workflow Installer from RED. In general Catalina nags you more about permissions than previous macOS versions. The Vega cards (like on iMac Pros) seem to be susceptible to UI artifacts. For example, some plug-in windows flicker, and even the App Store window causes big patches on the displays. Move the windows around and they go away. Other than these nuisances, most apps seem to be OK, if you updated everything to 64-bit and the latest versions. FCPX 10.4.9 has some additional issues.

October 29, 2020 at 7:39 pmSame here. Luckily I had done almost nothing in my long term project since upgradfing to FCP 10.4.9 so I just went back to 10.4.6…

October 29, 2020 at 7:40 pmI agree. I am back to 10.4.6 and also Mojave, never went up to Catalina due to older ClipWrap footage I still need to use. 10.4.9 is buggy, for sure, to say the least.

October 30, 2020 at 12:53 pmYou should be able to use footage already processed by ClipWrap on Catalina, but if ClipWrap is 32-bit it won’t run on Catalina or any following MacOS version. ClipWrap was replaced by EditReady2 long ago, and is frequently updated.
There were significant performance enhancements to FCPX starting with 10.4.7. The current version is 10.4.10 and has substantial proxy workflow improvements. You can run that on Mojave — Catalina is not needed.
As always any upgrade should be done carefully. It’s a good idea to backup all FCPX libraries and use Finder to duplicate and rename the Final Cut Pro.app file in /Applications. That facilitates an easy rollback if encountering problems.
Most issues with newer FCPX versions seem related to out-of-date 3rd-party plugins. Under no conditions update in a cavalier fashion. Especially update any CoreMelt plugins.
