  • updating from 10.3.9 to Leopard and FCP4.5 to FCS2

Have been sitting on my hands waiting to upgrade from my antiquated G4 running 10.3.9 and FCP4.5 to a Mac Pro running Leopard and FCS2 until the comments on the forum seemed to signal the all clear. It looked like the smoke was beginning to clear – until I saw a post yesterday stating that Leopard will not recognize FCP4.5.

Here’s my issue. I have several projects that have been hanging around in various stages (mostly private ones I play around with between paying gigs) that I would like to take along with me to my new system (so I could continue to play around with them).

Will I be able to move those projects and their files into my new system and get them running in Leopard/FCS2? Also, will I be able to move old files in general into this new system (I have some stock footage for specific corporate clients that I re-use again and again – shots of the US Capitol building, etc.)?

Of course. Once you have your new Mac/FCS2 ready to go probably the easiest way to transfer files from your G4 is to connect the two computers via an ethernet cable and transfer away.

Yes. I file share all the time between a G4, G5, Macbook Pro and Mac Pro via ethernet. There are no issues from tranferring actual files between PowerPC systems and Intel systems as long as you don’t expect programs from your G4 to run on your Intel MacPro.

Thanks so much for the clarification between media files (QT), projects and programs. I feel much better now knowing that all my projects created using FCP4.5 and all my media files (QT) digitized on an OS 10.3.9 or earlier platform will be available after I move to my new, slick Mac Pro.

That only means that once you have installed Leopard (in an Intel or PPC) you won’t be able to install FC 4.5 in that system. But as Don Says, the FC projects you will be able to open and change in FC6. Anyway keep a copy of your project on the original version. You never know.
