    Hi,

Just bought software from someone who realized that Avid was too complicated for them. They bought 2.8 then went to Avid’s site which allowed them to download the 3.0 upgrade (I guess because it was in June).

They then sold their software to me. I have their 2.8 dongle and original software along with their download on a CD. When I installed their 3.0 then tried to run 3.0 it said I am not licensed to run this. I went on this site and Avid’s and so far it seems that they (the seller) may not have undated their dongle(?).

    So, my question is:

What is the correct procedure for updating from 2.8 to 3.0? Is there a way for me to update the dongle? The seller is not very technical and can’t recall seeing an dongle updater anywhere.

My understanding, and forgive me if I’m wrong, is that it is not possible to upgrade academic versions of Avid software.

I’d recommend you email Avid direct to confirm.

If I remember correctly, when I updated from xpress pro 4 to 5.2 I received an email with a code number and a link to download the correct version of the dongle updater. I did this on the avid website. If they did a mail-in thing, they would have received a card with the upgrade code and possibly a cd or floppy with the dongle updater program. once you have that stuff the process reminded me of flashing the BIOS on a motherboard… scary, but satisfying at the same time.
    good luck
