  • update to 8.1 killed my resolve

So yeah, what a nightmare. I’ve got clients in the morning and my resolve, for all intents and purposes is dead. I’m grading a 1080p29.97 series of spots and only getting a max of 28fps. Like I said, this is MAX fps, as in, it is all over the place. Bouncing erratically between 24fps and 28fps.

This is a project we’ve been working on for 2 weeks. All source material is 10bit DPX. I have had no issues with realtime performance up until last night when I installed 8.1. The performance is the same even after a fresh install of the OS, Cuda, and Resolve on a brand new system drive.

This situation is making me re-consider any further financial or workflow investment in Resolve. You may ask why. The answer being the lack of any sort of priority support contract. Support being limited to 9am-4pm office hours makes it very difficult to use Resolve in a professional setting. The resolve is the only system in our facility that has no such support.

If anyone has any ideas on things to try, please do shout them out!!!

    hardware config:
    mac pro 5,1
    8-core 2.4ghz
    24gb ram
    gt 120 gui
    gtx 285 gpu
    550MB/s external hardware raid

    Things I’ve tried:
    Complete fresh install of OS
    10.6.8
    Cuda 4.0.19
    Resolve 8.1 with restored database

    1. Install gtx 470
    2. Install lion, cuda 4.0.50 and latest decklink drivers – mine works great
    3. If 1 or 2 is not applicable – try to convert your old time dpx to prores 444 ( you can experiment with just one shot)

How many Gpus does it state on startup. Have you checked the config file to see if all your gpus are listed. I found a bug in 8.01 that when adding storage in the preferences it removed my gpus from the config file killing lite alltogether, I have to manually copy and paste the gpu settings from the default config file.

it’s pretty amazing how people use big words ,such as ” resolve killed” such as “I will never invest anymore on blackmagic because of support “…etc…

is 1000 usd an investment that should justify 24:7 support ??

seems that people have no issue to spend “only” 1k and and start “big projects “, call themselves a Pro facility etc …than blame the lack 24/7 support …

also everybody know that is not suggested update having a project in progress …or at Least backup first

    seriously is not fare

ps: countless people updated to 8.1 with issue ..

    1. We bought resolve because we liked the software. Not because of the price.
    2. We run it on a Mac because Linux sucks to use. We have several autodesk linux systems and if we had the option to get the performance and features we need on a more mainstream and compatible OS for those systems, we would choose that option.
    3. If a $15,000/yr maintenance and support contract was available for resolve, we would buy it.
    4. No one care about your opinions. You have no idea what you’re talking about. If you have nothing to say that will contribute to solving the problem being discussed in this thread, post elsewhere, start a new thread, or don’t post at all.

    thanks,

    library>preferences> blackmagic design>davinci resolve>config.dat
you`ll also find default-config-mac.dat which is where I copied the default settings from.
At least on my 8.01 Lite.

I`ve always believed, along with the people I like to work with, that shouting or complaining about a problem generally doesn`t get it solved.

    Good luck

You call for a “professional” support, but you have no problem with updating your software in the middle of the project? Seriously?
I’m am very happy, that you’d perfectly illustrated the number one point of professional behavior – NEVER UPDATE YOUR SOFTWARE IN THE MIDDLE OF PROJECT OR USE BETA SOFTWARE IN A PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT!!!
I bet anything, that you didn’t even bothered to back up your database, as required, before upgrading to 8.1. And that is why you can’t even go back to 8.0.1, right?
Blame yourself for what had transpired and stop besmirching Blackmagic’s product and it’s service. Or better yet, move to another platform. That is, if you can find ANYTHING even close in power, usability and , yes, GREAT service. I’m sure Blackmagic will not lose much sleep from losing your patronage.
If you have $15k to spend and you’re looking for 24/7 support, talk to Assimilate. They will be happy to take your money, that is, if they are still around in 6 months…
I hope Blackmagic would consider doing, what Red did to one of the jerks, who was refusing to behave. He was permanently banned from any kind of service by Red…

Hmm. I guess I’m not sure you read my post.

I noted that I am working from a restored database. Policy here is regular database backups. Especially before software updates.

Sometimes updates mid project can be called for. It’s a decision to be made by the facility engineer.

It’s sad that we all have no other choice but to come here for support after 4pm or on the weekends.

Moving to another platform would be a decision that is not influenced by your suggestions.

Please be surprised if you see me posting on creative cow anytime in the near future.

Best of luck to you all.

I’m curious the reason to upgrading to 8.1 in the middle of the project.
What feature in 8.1 was so necessary, that the upgrade was done in such a haphazard and irresponsible way?
