So I have Betacam Sp footage that I want to include in a DVCPROHD 1080i sequence. I own an I/O, and a Kona 2. My solution thus far has been to injest at 8 bit uncompressed via I/O, then export that file via quicktime conversion to a DVCPROHD file and then insert that file onto the timeline. I tried putting the 8 bit uncompressed file on the timeline and render, but I didn’t like the motion artifacting. Isn’t there a way to have the Kona 2 card upconvert for me? Or another solution? Thanks in advance.

Yeah, just set it to capture at DVCPro HD 1080i and feed your footage via SDI. The Kona 2 does an automatic upconvert if you feed it an SD signal and you’re set to capture HD. I do it all the time when I need to include DV footage into DVCPro HD 720 timelines.

Walter, thanks for the tip, I tried the upconvert, however the motion artifacting and edge detail were poor. I still got a better result from the quciktime export to DVCPROHD of the 8 bit uncompressed capture via the IO . Any thoughts? -Rick

That’s the nature of up-converting. Just about all hardware up-converts have a problem with edge aliasing and “jaggies” due to the interlaced footage essentially being blown-up. About half of my upconverts are very clean and the other half are not useable depending on what the shot is and how much motion is in the shot.

The only way to get a perfect up-convert is to go to a shop with a Terranex converter.

Thanks for the insight. But, can you tell me why I get a more acceptable result exporting the uncompressed sd capture as an hd file rather than just rendering that same file in the sequence. Even better than the hardware upconvert from Kona.
