Actually I am using firewire as deck control. But which Convergent Design box did you have in mind?

June 18, 2010 at 1:54 pmHi Shane,
Sorry, you’re right HD Connect SI is no longer available on Convergent Design’s web site or even BH Photo Video. But Video Guys is still selling it for $795:

But I don’t have any HDV footage. Are you recommending I get this device because of my Sony M35U deck? Because all the footage I have to upconvert is DV only.

June 18, 2010 at 4:05 pmYes Jeremy,
Thank you very much, I did. I was surprised to see how good Compressor is at upconverting your SD 1930s footage to HD. I couldn’t tell the difference between the Compressor upconverted HD footage and the Kona upconverted HD footage. Even after looking at both several times.
After changing the frame rate of my SD footage from 29.97 to 24P while still SD, I got good results, as you said. I just wish that my MXO2 upconverted 720p29.97 footage could translate as flawlessly into 24P as my SD clips did.

June 18, 2010 at 4:14 pm[Nicholas Natteau] ” couldn’t tell the difference between the Compressor upconverted HD footage and the Kona upconverted HD footage. Even after looking at both several times. “
One was 24p (the Compressor converted footage) and one was 60p (Kona). The point was to show you that I can get true 24p HD material from a 525i file with pulldown and very good quality, which is what I am recommending you do. The Kona footage looks very good too, but it’s 60p and doesn’t help you out with your project, unless you edit in a 60P timeline, which is also possible and has already been mentioned.
Again, my advice, for editing in a 24p timeline, capture your DV footage as SD ProRes, then use Compressor to both up-convert and reverse telecine in one step to 720p23.976 and DVCPro HD or ProRes, whatever codec you want.
For editing in a 60p timeline, simply capture the Sd footage aas 720p60, and edit in your DVCPro HD 720p24 in to that same 60p timeline. FCP will properly handle pulldown in a 720p timeline.
[Nicholas Natteau] “I just wish that my MXO2 upconverted 720p29.97 footage could translate as flawlessly into 24P as my SD clips did.
“Exactly, since the clip now has no interlacing, the reverse telecine doesn’t work anymore. You have to do the reverse telecine while the footage is still interlaced, not when it’s already progressive as it is when upconverted to 720p29.97.
Hope that is starting to make more sense to you.
Jeremy

June 18, 2010 at 8:47 pmI used the SI for HDV capture as ProRes…not for DV. So… don’t get it. Capture with what works. Just saying that those decks are wonky.
