Upconverting BetaSP to DVCPRO HD via Kona 3
For the first time I am attempting to upconvert BetaSP footage and capture it as DVCPRO HD 720p 23.98 (heck, even 29.97) to mix it in with the DVCPRO HD that we shot with the Varicam and HVX-200. The Kona CP is set to upconvert to DVCPRO HD 720p 59.94.
So I have the deck hooked up to the HD10AVA miniconverter that is routed thru the Kona 3. My Easy Setup is Kona 3 DVCPRO HD 720p24 Varicam running at 23.98. But whenever I try to capture this footage, the audio is fine, but the video is playing back in slow motion. I captured it as 23.98, 29.97…doesn’t matter. Slow motion video, regular speed audio.
Having the assistants try to figure out what it is tonight, but in case they don’t…

The Kona does not do 29.97 to 23.98 frame rate conversions in sd to hd. You must capture @ 59.94 then convert to 23.98 using compressor or Nattress or whatever you flavor.

OK…that makes sense. But I also had the frame rate set to 29.97 and it STILL slowed it down.
Hmm…I’ll try the DVCPRO HD 720p30 settings.

You have to remember the 720p really runs @ 59.94 all the time so putting it @ 30 is still like halving the frame rate of 59.94 and that’s why you see slow motion.
Cap @ 59.94 and frame rate convert after.

Thanks Jeremy…worked great. Captured 720p60 and dropped it into a 720p 23.98 timeline and it looks fine.
Only issue is that we will be using COLOR to color correct, so we need EVERYTHING to be the same codec and frame rate, so I need to convert the 720p60 to 720p24. Compressor was icky, but just exporting it from the timeline in FCP as a Self Contained QT Movie then reimporting that worked great.

No extra plugins other than what comes standard…since I have to match the other systems.
