Up Rez SD to HD
The company I work for uses Quantel and it handles mixed formats very well. Since everything we broadcast is HD I need to up rez any SD I get. I can basically change any clips rez on the fly. I do this by bringing it into QFX (built in effects program) and click 1280×1440 in a drop down and render. Its that simple.
My question is if your working on an HD project and you get a unexpected SD clip how do you up rez it and if you’re working on a SD project and get an unexpected HD clip how do up rez the rest of the SD footage?

while dropping a different formated clip on a timeline will make FCP render the final to the timeline’s setting it is never recommended especially for up-Rezing. This should be done in other programs, such as Compressor (with Frame Control turned on) Shake, Instant HD or similar. For down-Rezing it is still recommended that you use this types of programs if you are looking for the cleanest results.

FCP can upres within a sequence automatically, but the quality is generally not very good (but fine for roughing things out, until you replace it later).
There are a number of plugins available which do a better job within FCP. You can also send the clip to Motion or Compressor (included in the suite) for a superior upconvert. If its tape based material, capture cards from AJA and Blackmagic can upres on ingest.
I don’t think you will find it as convenient as Quantel, but you will have to consider what that convenience is worth to you when you compare the costs.

Get a Kona 3 or MXO2…they do this via hardware when you injest. Far better than FCP. Quantel is a VERY pricy box…so it better do this well. FCP is $1200…take that as you may.

Just finished an HD project on travel medicine that had loads of our archived Asia B-roll originally shot in Beta SP from way back in the day. Footage was up converted on the fly using the Kona 3 to DVCPro HD into an XDCam HD 35VBR timeline. Even tho the archive footage was shot about 10 years ago it still held up well with no rendering before effects. And down converting to Digi Beta is easy too although we master to XDCam discs. Its one of the priciest, but Kona 3 is the way to go if you can afford it.
