Up Res Export – Anamorphic to HD
Hello,
I have to ship a program file to a captioning house in two days.
The program media is anamorphic. The captioned master will be HDCam. The captioning house has requested that the program file be delivered using FC QT Export (not Conversion) with the export preset ‘HD Uncompressed 8-bit w/ settings.’
I’ve edited the program using FCP 6. The only direct FC QT uncompressed 8-bit export preset I see is NTSC.
Could someone please confirm that to get the desired result, the best export path is below, or if it isn’t, recommend a better option?

Setting: Custom
Frame Size: 1280×1080 / Apsect Ratio: HD (1280×1080) (16:9) *
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (1280×1080)
Anamorphic: unchecked
Field Dominance: None
Editing Timebase: 29.97
Timecode Rate: Same as Editing Timebase
QT Video Settings: Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2
Quality: 100%*Why is 1920×1080 not a choice?

What are your sequence setting now? Codec? frame rate? Sounds like you are up converting from a SD movie, QT export is not going to do a great job, at best it is so so. And if you are going from interlaced to progressive (720 is always progressive) that is another hit on quality.
I would highly recommend a hardware up convert or at least use Compressor with frame control set to best (be prepared for a long encoding time.) or a plugin like InstantHD.

My current sequence settings are:
Frame size: 720×486 / CCIR 601 NTSC (40:27)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC – CCIR 601 / DV (720×480)
Anamorphic 16:9 checked
Field Dominance: Lower
Editing TB: 29.97
Compressor: Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)I’d like the export to be interlaced.
I’m not sure I can swing a hardware update in time (though please let me know what you recommend).
Do you still suggest Compressor? If so, which settings?

Firstly Export using Qt movie, current setings. Take that file into Compressor and do the conversion there to Uncompressed 8 bit 1920 x 1080 60i Upper field. As Michael says, turn frame controls on and set for best. Do not deinterlace.
HDCam is not 720p, that is why I suggest 1080 60i to best match your source and be the right frame and field rendering for HDCam.

In your sequence setting the compressor should not be ProRes (HQ) unless the footage was captured or transferred as (HQ) waste of space and can cause problems.
What is the footage info?
