unwanted left and right borders even though aspect ratio always 1.333
I’m hoping someone can shed some light on how videos work with aspects.
I have set up a 1440 x 1080 video project in Sony Vegas.
When I add images to the timeline, a black border appears on the left and right. My image is 2816 x 2112, which is the same ratio as 1440 x 1080 (a ratio of 1.3333). So why do I get borders? Surely the image should scale up to fill the whole window perfectly?
Perhaps theres something I don’t understand about the video format…?
And what would be the best fix?
I have added hundreds of images all of different size (but all 1.3333 ratio) – I don’t want to have to fix them one by one!Thanks for the help!

Aspect Ratio = Width * Pixel Aspect Ratio / Height
I suppose PAR is 1.3333 ? So the AR = 1.7777 (16:9) -
Click the very first picture to highlight it, open Pan/Crop, right-click in the centre of it, select “Match Output Aspect” and exit.
Click image #2, shift+click the last one in the sequence (to select all of them), right-click and select “Paste Event Attributes”.
Repeat as necessary. -
SOLUTION
In the video properties, there was some setting (can’t remember what it was called exactly) that was to do with the pixel ratio.
I didn’t realise that in videos there is this other aspect to takle into account.
By setting the ratio to 1, the borders disappeared, and all the images fit perfectly.

hmm I still have this problem. I’ve tried every pixel aspect ratio and just about every other project setting. (BTW Mike K this happens even when “Match Output Aspect” is selected in Pan/crop.)
I still got a black border on bottom or on right depending on the size of the crop. Even happens if I crop image to exact dimensions as project!
Only 2 work arounds I’ve found is 1.)zooming in the track motion, good for multiple files on same track (but a little bogus, resolution-wise) or in Pan/Crop toggling No/Yes for Maintain Aspect Ratio (fixes without losing resolution…but cannot be Event Attribute pasted if your images are different sizes.)
I’m using 10D but have seen this on versions 6 and 7 I believe too.
