  • Unix server for shared storage?

We have three FCP edit suites. At the moment, each editor captures footage to their own drives, and if we need to share footage, we transfer it back and forth over ethernet. Our IT guy wants to allocate a portion of our company’s new UNIX server as a shared storage location for our three systems. He proposes to connect each FCP station to the server with fibre cables.

In this scenario, all three editors would capture footage to the server, which would then be our shared storage. We won’t need to work on the same FCP projects at the same time, but we may need to be working from the same files (clips) at the same time.

Aside from my worries about speed, are we going to run into problems with this set-up? FCP seems so picky about media management that I’m afraid to go down this path at the moment. I see a headache approaching.

    Anyone have any advice?
