Under pressure! But, who isn’t these days! Connecting old tech to new tech!
Posted by David Gray on January 1, 2016 at 11:18 pmHello, I’m trying to capture video from 3/4 tapes using a Sony VO9850 deck. I have a AJA Kona LHe Plus internal card in a MacPro 4,1 OS X 10.8.5 24GB Ram 2×2.26 Quad-Cre Intel Xeon. How do I connect them or what do I need to connect them. I am using FCP 7. I also have the standard cable that comes with the card. I tried connecting in several different ways. I am receiving audio because I see it on the FCP meter but I can’t hear it during playback or see correct video. I see a scrabbled picture. Advice?

January 2, 2016 at 5:37 pmDo you have Genlock? A Color Sync Generator? Black Burst. You need something to stabilize the video signal.

January 3, 2016 at 9:23 amNo! I do not! I knew something was missing! Thanks! Any suggestions on which company, name and model of a good color sync generator with black burst or genlock device to purchase to stabilize the video signal?

January 3, 2016 at 5:40 pmAJA has a Gen10 it does HD and SD Genlock. Horta also makes a black burst gen.
See if you can rent one if it’s just a few tapes.

January 4, 2016 at 7:38 amThanks for the info! However, it’s not just for a few tapes. We have several tapes to convert. Do you know which one will handle such an old deck?

January 6, 2016 at 5:06 amI was able to get a Blackmagic Mini Converter Sync Generator. But, I am still having the same probable! I have the video out from the Sony VO9850 going to sync generator and Ref in from the AJA Kona LHe plus going to the sync generator but a scrabble picture still appears in the capture window of FCP 07. What am I doing incorrectly?

January 6, 2016 at 5:08 amIs the deck terminated with an SDI terminator? Not sure if you need one with that deck.

January 6, 2016 at 11:28 amI believe I have one. What does it look like? Once I find it, where is the BNC SDI suppose to be connected?

January 6, 2016 at 4:50 pmIt looks like a BNC barrel extender with one side close off. Where it goes depends on your cabling set up. Mine is on my breakout box on the ref loop chain.

January 6, 2016 at 11:16 pmThanks for your help! Between you and the tech at AJA the problem was solved. The settings in the Kona control panel and in FCP 07 had to be configured for this old deck format and the internal Kona card to communicate.
