Ultra Studio 3D problem playback to HDMI monitor from NLE timelines.

I have an Ultra Studio 3D connected to my iMac i5 27″ via Thunderbolt, and a LaCie 2GB connected to the second Thunderbolt out from the iMac. The US3D HDMI output goes to an LG LED TV.

I edit with both FCP7 and PremiereProCS5.
All was working well with FCP playing back full 1080 23.976 PRHQ files using both the FCP Viewer and the Canvas. (BMD HDMI output from FCP is 23.976 to 59.94 8bit) The Canvas has now stopped playing back picture to the monitor, but I still get sound via the HDMI.

In Premiere, US3D plays back my Canon5DM2 source footage fine via the Premiere Viewer, but never has played video from the timeline to the monitor, just black screen.

BMD Media Express plays back fine to the monitor.

The US3D does sometimes lose its detectability if I switch playback from Black Magic Audio to built in audio, or changing video format settings…Ah, growing pains…

I await a reply from BMD Tech Support, but truly appreciate any ideas or similar problems, resolved or not?

In Premiere Pro, Is the sequence you are trying to view a “Blackmagic” sequence setting? If not you will only see a black screen from PPro.

Hi Kris,
That solved the issue with Premiere…Thank you!

I am transitioning to Premiere and was not using a BM Sequence.
I don’t recall any BMD US3D literature requiring use of a BM sequence for timeline playback.

I find it odd the US3D device will playback fine from a viewer, but won’t playback any accepted formats from a non BMD Sequence.

This is my first Black Magic tool.
I have AJA Kona2, Kona3 and IOLA up until now.

Now, to discover why FCP, which I have used for years, stopped playing video from timeline sequences to the monitor.

You will have to set your sequence settings in FCP to use the blackmagic playback settings as well.

Hi James,

There’s a few things to check that may affect the output from FCP7.

First, please make sure that View->External Video is set to ‘All Frames’ and that View->Video Playback is set to the relevant Blackmagic Video output mode. Finally the best way to set FCP7 up is to use the Blackmagic Easy Setups located in Final Cut Pro->Easy Setups. Sometimes using customer setups can cause issues.

I find these would typically solve output issues in FCP7, but if you continue to have problems, your regional support team should be able to help you out.
