I search other posts but none of them seem to find a good answer.
I am creating a gradient like this:
My background is green. I have an adjustement layer. I draw an oval mask. I ad a filter “Levels” to it. I reversed the mask. So what’s outside the oval is gradually getting darker. I set 150 of feather. But even if I am in 16bits, it looks like some bands are been rendered. Not acceptable. I am using After Effects 6.5.1 on latest Mac OS X 10.4.4 and QT 7.0.1 (back from that shitty 7.0.4..).

Are you rendering it to a 16 bit format or 8 bit format? Are you watching it on 8 bit output? Any of these will add banding. You can also add a touch of noise which will smooth out banding.

Side note: I cuss like a sailor in real life, but I think the Cow needs to keep clean language for the conservative youngins. 🙂

    Thanks Chris.
I was rendering 16 bits. I somehow found a way to make it look smoother by using Color Finesse adjusting the rgb gain and gamma within a layer adjustment.
