Two Weird Things
Hey guys,
Got two weird things that have happened. The first thing is I sent off two digibetas to a sound house. I layed off both from a Black Magic HD card, watched them and they both seemed cool. I made one tape with audio and one without (by request). Anyhow, got a call from the sound place and they said they were not able to lay sound down on the tapes. I had pushed in the protective tab, but that wasn’t it (and I probably seemed like an asshole for even suggesting that that may have been the problem). They said they tried everything and just were not able to lay back audio to either tape. I’ve never run into that problem before. What could that be about? They said they could do it on other tapes they had laying about, just not the ones I gave them. STRANGE.My other question is whether anyone knows a way to solve this FCP glitch. In my Browser window, sometimes when I am in list view and a folder has a lot of clips in it and I open it up, my other folders below it disappear and I can’t use the scroll bar to find them, they only reappear if I close the folder…this is really really annoying sometimes. And if the folder has an extremely large number of clips in it it won’t show me all of them, so I have to make a new bin and place the ones that I can see in it before the others wiil magically appear.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have never heard anything like that. Why can’t they insert sound? What is happening?

Can’t think of anything that would have caused your tapes to go bad. You could try sending them new tapes.
Or they could give you the audio and you could put it in your timeline, then make the master.
As far as the FCP bug, I’m not sure how to get around it. It happens to me sometimes too.

Hehe…Thanks for the love guys. Yeah, that is exactly what I ended up doing, having them email me the mix and I just layed it off again with the final audio. It seems so weird to me, but it also seems like it is a problem on their end, and not my end. But I am done freelancing at that place, so guess it isn’t my problem any more…oops, did I say that out loud.

Thats definitely a problem on their end.
I wonder if their audio knobs were pulled out and all the way down and they didn’t notice, or perhaps the audio input buttons were flashing indicating no audio lock and they didn’t notice.

I have only had that problem once before when a client hired in a portable digi beta deck and dumped out 13 half hour programs and then trashed his media. We couldn’t insert the audio on our Sony 2000 digi beta cause the portable had locked in the audio as stereo only! This prevents most digi machines from being able to insert edit on the audio tracks, even the stereo tracks as the data blocks on tape are incorrect.
Did you or are they using the Sony portable deck (can’t remember the model number offhand)? I know it is typical to blame audio people and that they often blame pic post people but a more positive approach is to work out why and inform. So please tell us if you sort this out.
The fix btw was to transfer all programs from my J3 to the 2000, via SDI and insert the audio onto the new tape via AES at the same time.

Yeah, I definitely don’t want to jump the gun and play the blame game, because as time has shown me, whenever I blame the other guy it usually turns out to be my fault 🙂 Unfortunately, I may never find out the reason behind that problem, as I am no longer freelancing at that company, and I don’t even know which audio house it was that they were using. Hopefully I don’t ever run into that problem again, but if I do, the next time I will get down to the bottom of it, unfortunately there just wasn’t the time to figure it out…just had to get a the spots out the door.
