I am editing two video tracks in sync – V1 and V2. How do I view
both tracks in real time as I edit – in two separate canvas windows?
    Thanks,
    Dave

You can only have one canvas. But, if you reduce each clip using Size in the Motion tab and place them side-by-side, you can see both at once. When you’re finished with the edit Remove Attribute will pop everything back to full screen. You can also set up a Multiclip that will allow you to see both tracks at once and make edit decisions.

this is super easy when you remember that ANYTHING that is a tab in FCP can be pulled out into its own window.

    Open both of your Sequences.

Look in your Canvas Window and you’ll notice there are two tabs in there, one for each Sequence.

Simply grab one of the tabs and pull it out into its own window. Just pull it out anywhere on your desktop and let go.

You can also pull out the second Sequence into its own window.

Now edit back and forth across the two sequences and the two Canvas windows will show up.

If you’re editing with two computer screens like I do, I put each Sequence / Canvas on its own screen.

[John Fishback] “You can only have one canvas”

You can actually have any many Canvas Screens as you like. 🙂

NEVERTHELESS…you cannot view one timeline in TWO canvases. You can’t view V1 in one canvas, and V2 in another…and play in sync. Doesn’t work that way. What John said is your solution.

    Walter,
Confused by “two sequences”. I am in one sequence, with
    2 synced video tracks.

Why not use multicam? If your video are in sync, set an In point on both master clips that are in sync and make a multicam clip. Canvas will show only the active angle but the viewer shows both.

I’m with Michael … setting up and using a Multiclip is by far the simplest approach to this … but if you really want to see both side by side then you can use the Playhead Sync > Gang mode. Double click the clip on V1 so that it’s timeline instance loads into the Viewer window, then choose View menu > Playhead Sync > Gang (or use the middle of the 3 popup menu buttons at top center of the Viewer or Canvas window).

    Cheers

    Andy,
    Re: Gang

This lets me see where the second track is each time I stop the action, but this second window does not move in real time – I’m getting a freeze frame.

Ah, you’re looking for V1 and V2 at the same time, then as others have said, MultiClip is the way to go.

Sorry Dave, it’s not a perfect solution or I’d not have suggested Multiclip as a preference :-(. Just to confirm, yes, the image is updated when paused / scrubbing but not during playback. Question for you: Is there any specific reason you’re looking to avoid using Multiclip? If its just an issue of preview image size then don’t forget that you can of course resize the Viewer window hence resize the preview.
