Well, spent the last day figuring out that the problem of my Vegas Win7 64 HP machine (1 year old) turning itself off after 15 seconds was not either the hard drive nor the power supply, but a dying motherboard…sigh…I may have caused it in my many times of adding hardware to the system.

Well, the good news is that I do have hard disks that are fully functional, and I have ordered a new Dell workstation on deep discount (since I don’t need anything but frame, motherboard and higher end video card, since I think that triggered the death.

But this is a good reminder to ‘back up your systems’. A death of a system can happen anytime, when you least expect it. I failed over to my laptop for getting my production work out on Monday, though it won’t work for daily use.

    Some basics:

Buy a eSata doc and card you can plug into your desktop for backup, or use an esata card for laptop.
CLONE your hard drive main system disk using Windows Administrative tools.
BACKUP your data drive to a second physical hard disk. Maybe take a copy off site. Your building can burn down or you could be broken into by a crack addict who simply takes all your gear. It happens all the time in cities. Offsite is essential for work that is worth something.
-Do this monthly, if not weekly, if not daily depending on your workload.
If you want to test your system, get a big black plastic bag (like a leaf bag), and come in some day, and cover your computer. It’s just crashed. Now what? Think through all the possible situations. I used to use this in our company to test users without freaking them out. I’d cover the computer with the bag before they arrived.
