  • TV Monitor Hookup with FCP – freezing up

Posted by Paula Stein on January 5, 2009 at 11:32 pm

    Hi,

In the past, I successfully set my TV Monitor with this path:
mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv

    I had no problems.
This time I am working with with Apple ProRes422(HQ) in FCP.
The image plays in FCP timeline but freezes up completely on the TV Monitor.
Does it have to do with the codec being Apple ProRes?

I’ve also done these following steps and it still has the same problem:
View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video

    Thanks for your help.

You cannot view PRORES out thru firewire…especially not thru a DV device. The only format that works via firewire through your DV device is DV. DVCPRO HD is viewable via firewire, but only thru a DVCPRO HD device.

With ProRes, to view it externally you need an HD capture device (card, external box) and an HD monitor.

    Hi Shane,

Thanks for yours response. Just viewed your blog page.. great work.

Do you know if there is an alternate way to view thru FCP on a TV monitor with out having an HD card? Any ideas?
I need to screen a feature film edit assembly…

    Thanks for your help.

Only to use Digital Cinema Preview and play the footage full screen on your computer monitor. DVI out. Or rent a DVCPRO HD Deck or P2 Gear or HPX-170 and play out through them. (Need a full 6-pin firewire connection).

Hi Paula, hope you get it worked out. Shane is right, you can’t do it without a video capture card.
