In terms of just slicing and dicing, removing breaths, etc., I simply zoom in on the VO, then go through it section by section, using the Insert Silence command on the selected breath (works on background noise as well, or page noise). The best tip I can give you is to zoom in tight, so you can really see the waveform, and take out awkward pauses (I just select a bit of silence, then hit Delete).

I also leave the Auto Heal feature turned on, so if I cut something out, or add something in, it helps it to sound natural:

Ended up going thru the Lynda.com course. Picked up a few tips, like first adjusting the zero crossing, taking advantage of the multiple clipboards feature, etc.

One feature I’ve always found a bit confusing is how to apply effects, AND save them in case you want to reopen the file at another time.

Even though there is an Effects rack available in the wave editor, once you apply the effects, they are gone.

My understanding is that you MUSt create a multitrack session, and then use the effects there if you want to reopen at another time, and change the effects previously applied.

You know you can save Effects Presets, just like in other Adobe software? You can also assign them to a hot key. Here’s a short tutorial:
