  • Tuning Vocals and Instruments in Vegas Pro 10 (or 11, or 12)? Autotune or Melodyne

Posted by Dave Kirkey on February 17, 2013 at 3:46 am

I know a lot of folks here use Vegas for audio production as well as Video Production so, I’d like to hear from folks that use Vegas for multi-track audio production. I have been looking at Autotune as a way to tune vocals but someone suggested I look at Celemony Melodyne Editor it looks really good and can tune instruments as well as vocals. I downloaded a trial copy of Melodyne Editor and it is a bit quirky.. For example, I add it as a VST plug in on a track, it opens and at that point I have to “Transfer the Audio” from that track by soloing it out and playing the track.. but it seems to stop after about 30 seconds to 1 minute of audio and stalls..

So, I guess my question is does anyone use Melodyne Editor with Vegas, if so, is it working good for you and is there special settings to use it..

Also, What is Rewire and does Vegas or Soundforge support “Rewire”?

Hope I hear back from someone that knows..

    Dave

Its best you go with AutoTune, but to get the best from
this Audio VST plugin, you must really have a good knowledge
    of it and its features.
Vegas nor Soundforge does not work with Rewire, Only Sony Acid Pro.

I use Melodyne Editor and I use it outside of Vegas Pro. I pitch correct the audio first in Melodyne stand-alone, then render to WAV and use those files in Vegas. Melodyne does not work in Vegas Pro like other DAW’s.

Good Morning John, thanks for the reply, I have used the stand along as well, but when working with musicians they want to hear the music along with it as I tune…. but as a stand alone it is pretty amazing. I wish that Sony would work with Celomony to get it to work. I understand it has something to do with using Rewire? I just read where Acid Pro 7 will work with Melodyne although I have not tried it, I’ve never used Acid although when talking with Sony on the phone they seem to think it’s a great multi track editor .. and from what I see it says it has rewire…. I guess I can get the trial from Sony and give it a try…. but, I was hoping that I could use Vegas (which I have been using since Vegas 4 showed up)

One last question is there much difference in the audio interface and features going from Pro 10 to Pro 12, its hard to keep up with all the new versions…

    Thanks again for your reply

Morning Steve.. I just read your reply and thanks for the info, I’ve used AutoTune in the past, then someone showed me Melodyne editor and Wow, what a program … I have an older version of auto tune that I have tried from time to time but unless your really skilled it takes a lot of time…

I also just read an article on Acid Pro and it did say it supports rewire and Melodyne should work. I’ve always thought of Acid as a Loop program not a full featured multi-track audio editor. I don’t use Midi or loops I mainly take my multi-tracks from my Alesis HD24 and edit them in Vegas.. but Sony said for audio Acid pro will do everything Vegas will do and is more suited for audio.. (I just hate learning new programs). I think I will get the trial and give it a try, I have the trial of Melodyne and I’ll see if I can figure it out. I have never used any progarm that uses rewire and honestly, I don’t even know what it is 🙂

[Dave Kirkey] ” I wish that Sony would work with Celomony to get it to work. I understand it has something to do with using Rewire?”

Yea, it’s not going to happen. Vegas Pro doesn’t support ReWire and it is not trivial to add since Vegas Pro doesn’t even support VSTi or MIDI. Vegas Pro is not a good solution for people wanting to “compose” music. It’s really only good for people who simply want to “record” live music. As a multi-track recorder it’s great, but a “musical” tool it’s not. ACID Pro is Sony’s tool for composing music.

[Dave Kirkey] “I just read where Acid Pro 7 will work with Melodyne although I have not tried it”

I haven’t tried the new ReWire version of Melodyne with ACID Pro yet but the old VST version didn’t work well at all.

[Dave Kirkey] “I’ve never used Acid although when talking with Sony on the phone they seem to think it’s a great multi track editor .. and from what I see it says it has rewire…. I guess I can get the trial from Sony and give it a try.”

ACID Pro definitely has ReWire support and does multi-track recording. What bothers me is that it hasn’t been updated since 2008 and Sony won’t make any comments on it’s fate but when you let a product sit for 5 years and don’t update it while the rest of the world goes 64-bit… it makes you wonder.

[Dave Kirkey] “One last question is there much difference in the audio interface and features going from Pro 10 to Pro 12, its hard to keep up with all the new versions… “

At some point Sony made some major changes to the mixer and routing to external devices. I forget what version. You should probably download the trial and check it out for yourself. Only you can determine if it fits your workload.

The Vegas Pro and ACID Pro interfaces are almost identical and yes, ACID Pro can do it all. There is no need for Vegas Pro once you own ACID Pro. There are a few differences in the way ACID handles events but other than that, you can learn it in an afternoon since you already know Vegas Pro.

[Dave Kirkey] “I think I will get the trial and give it a try, I have the trial of Melodyne and I’ll see if I can figure it out. I have never used any progarm that uses rewire and honestly, I don’t even know what it is :-)”

It is hard to understand and configure properly. Basically it’s a virtual audio cable and sync between two programs. ACID becomes the master and Melodyne becomes the slave. Kind of like syncing with two tape decks and equally as frustrating. Be prepared to spend a lot of time getting it to work. One of the reason’s I haven’t tried it yet is because I haven’t had the time or patience. It took forever to figure out how to ReWire ACID to SONAR and then it only worked some of the time. Good Luck.

John, thanks for the reply again… Wow, I down load the trial of ACID and either I’m just seeing it or I’m just not getting it.. I’ve been trying to figure how to import mono 44.1 24bit wav files in to it (like with Vegas where you import media, choose the media and add it along tracks) i don’t (or very seldom use stereo files. When I take my files off my HD24 drives and bring them up in Vegas it is very easy, they all line up, I can edit them and then once I edit them I just render as a new track and load that back to my HD24 drive and mix on my Sony DMXr 100 console..

Like I thought I think Acid is a lot more with the incorporating midi, sequencers and the like.. I’m looking on how I could just set up a preference that would just deal with Audio mono files … I’m beginning to think that it will be a real hassle trying to do all this with Melodyne. Like I said the stand alone is a great program, but Id love to be able to have all the tracks both insturmnts and vocals to work on tighting them up…. It is just way so confusing 🙂 Thanks for your help John…

You just drag them from your file system and drop them into ACID and it creates a track just like Vegas. I’m not understanding why you’re finding this to be different. There is no “import media”. Just drop your media onto the tracks.

[Dave Kirkey] “Like I thought I think Acid is a lot more with the incorporating midi, sequencers and the like.. I’m looking on how I could just set up a preference that would just deal with Audio mono files”

It does have this thing about making everything a loop, one-shot, or beat mapped track. I can see where that would get annoying if you just want everything to be a one-shot (which is what all Vegas events are).

[Dave Kirkey] “I’m beginning to think that it will be a real hassle trying to do all this with Melodyne.”

Yea, I don’t know what Celemony was thinking when they added ReWire support to Melodyne. I thought ReWire was dead. It’s certainly not the right interface for a tool that should be applied just like any other FX.

I would have to agree with you. I would use something more DAW friendly like Auto-Tune or Waves Tune. Melodyne is just way too convoluted.
