  Trying to un-mute all effects, from dissolves to time-coding

  Hello experts!

  Gnashing teeth here. In both Premiere Pro CC 2017 and Premiere Pro CS5.5, suddenly I could not add any effects to the timeline. For example, in timecode, clicking the tiny “fx” to toggle ON or OFF has zero effect. No timecode shows up.
  Adding a new transparent video track, and dragging in Timecode, nothing.

  Cannot dissolve, fade in, fade out. No video transitions or effects are possible.

  Rebooted my MacBook Pro several times to no avail. OS High Sierra 10.13.6

  It’s as if I have a global mute turned on. But in these older versions of Premiere I don’t even think such a button exists.

  Any suggestions will save me a lot of Tylenol.
