Trying to Improve performance of FCP system
Not quite ready to part ways with the G4 FCP system quite yet, but after experimenting with various storage solutions, I’m now looking to settle on one that is capable of handling DV and 8 bit uncompressed reliably. Here is what I have in my G4 right now.
Slot 1 – Adaptec Fireconnect 8300 Firewire 800/400 card
Slot 2 – Adaptec Duoconnect Firewire 400/USB 2.0 Card
Slot 3 – ATTO UL3D SCSI controller card
Slot 4 – MOTU PCI424 controller cardFor storage I have:
(1) G-Raid 320gb FW800 drive
(2) 120GB OWC Mercury Elite FW400 drives
(1) 250gb OWC Mercury Elite Drive
(1) 80gb Lacie FW400 drive
(1) 120gb Medea Video RT SCSI drive
(1) 100gb Medea Video Raid SCSI drive
(1) OWC Dual Bay external SCSI enclosure with (2) 36gb Seagate SCSI drives insideThe G4 is a dual 1ghz Quicksilver running OS 10.3.8 with 1.5gb of RAM. I have a Seagate HD as my system ATA drive, a second Maxtor ATA drive running a backup OS, and a 160gb Seagate ATA drive on standby with no real purpose yet.
Running FCP 4.5, and want to maximize my performance so that I can work with uncompressed SD video. I am considering trying SATA, possibly internal, striped. I have the drive slots avalable to do it, and I have my G4 in an ISObox which keeps the air moving. What are people’s suggestions based on the options I have in hand? I should mention that I do occasionally experience dropped frame issues with this current setup, and my Quickbench numbers seem lower than I would expect. I have done the usual rounds of diagnostics and troubleshooting but can’t quite pinpoint the bottleneck. I seem to get low write speeds more so than low read speeds.
Thanks,
Steve
