  • Trying to import MXF to FCP minus the txt

Hi all, I have been searching the web for helpful information on data that has been transferred by someone badly from the Panasonic HVX using the P2 card.

The issue is that they didn’t know what they were doing, and they neglected to copy over the text file. Now I see that there is software (Raylight) to help read the MXF files correctly off of the camera, but before I spend more money trying to find answers, I need to figure out if it can do the same if the data is already on disk.

Also, I’m wondering what is in the text files and trying to find a sample. Can someone send me a sample? Is it something I can rebuild? I’m pretty good with scripting my way out of a tight corner, like the one I find myself in.

This is my first time working with these systems, I am merely a visual effects person and the video side is not my forte’. I would appreciate any pointers though in trying to read my data into FCP or create some new text files manually.

I have audio, clip, icon, proxy, video and voice but no txt files.

    Thanks for any help!

Create a text doc in textedit, and paste this into it

    00176V
    1.0
    18

That’s it, then save it with th name “LASTCLIP.TXT” (no quotes), and for good measure cmd-I and lock the file. that should be able to get you somewhere. You need to modify the first line to match the last created video file name in the video folder. Then take the total number of clips and add 1 to it and replace the 3rd line with that number. Not sure, you might not have to modify the 3rd line. But the file structre should look like this-

Create a “Card 1” Folder (or name it whatever you want) then inside that folder there should be a CONTENTS (all caps) folder and the text file named LASTCLIP.TXT, then inside the contents folder should be all the other folders-

    AUDIO
    CLIP
    ICON
    PROXY
    VIDEO
    VOICE

    Hope this helps!

I just tried posting back and something odd happened, so I hope my apologies if this goes out twice and once unfinished.

I have created the .txt file as you said, but I am getting held up on trying to import. I basically don’t know what the workflow should be from here. Should I be doing:

    import -> folder

and if so then clicking on content in the directory? If so that isn’t working as of yet. I can’t get it to read files either. The only thing I get to come up are the low res .bmp images in FCP.

I would like to get this to work over using raylight, it seems cleaner, but feel like there is something still missing in what I’m doing. Any more advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Matt and Noah

    No…not FILE > IMPORT…

File > LOG AND TRANSFER. That is the interface for importing Panasonic P2 footage…and the AVCHD codec as well. And soon for importing XDCAM.

    Shane,

Thanks, but again I have to admit up front because some of my questions will sound obvious to everyone else. I am transferring this stuff because a fall out with the people who shot it, but I am just the visual effects guy and I’m not familiar with FCP.

I have tried to import like you said, but it just gives me an error. Again though, I’m not sure I’m trying to call footage in from the log and transfer widget correctly. I am holding down the right mouse button that shows, add custom path, and then I try to bring in the topmost directory above contents, although I have tried every iteration below as well. Am I missing another place to call in data? Or is my .TXT file possibly still not setup correctly? I have followed Matt’s advice above.

    Thanks again,

    Daev

Is the CONTENTS folder named anything other than straight old CONTENTS? Like, CONTENTS 1, or Contents #1, or Card 1 or CONTENTS 0918 or something like that? It can’t be if it is to work right. When copying the card to a hard drive, you should copy them INTO a folder that is named Card 1 or A-Cam 091807-01 or something. But the CONTENTS and Lastclip.txt need to be present in this folder, and not named anything else.

    Shane,

I double checked and was about to report that my files were named correctly until I saw that instead of CONTENTS, it said CONTENT, no S at the end.

I’ve renamed the folder and I have been able to bring in the data.

Thanks so much to everyone for their help, I’ve felt so helpless with the data until coming to this website and getting help from you all.

    Cheers!

    Hello,

I’ve been importing P2 footage from a external hardrive, I have about 13 folders worth of P2 downloads ten of which work fine, the only trouble im having is with the first three and I think it maybe a LASTCLIP file problem.

The first two files had LASTCLIP files that where completely blank yet the second one would still import the first video clip from it but only that one. The third file had some strange jibberish in it – ?t?:t
