    What’s not working with Echo? As long as you get your precomps right, Echo seems like the perfect filter for this look.

    I think I’m struggling to make the spheres behave the way they look like on the video.

    The trails don’t move — they pop up in place after the leader passes their position. In other words, you don’t want the trails to actually follow the animation of the leader.

    I’d animate the leader, then use its animated position to drive the emitter in a particle system. The particles should have neither velocity from the emitter nor velocity from motion, and you their decay can be controlled with the particles’ opacity over life setting.
