  • Trouble with .mts files in Premiere Pro CS 5.5

Posted by Jarred Romesburg on August 18, 2011 at 3:46 pm

OK, I know everyone’s eyes are rolling as I have seen multiple posts on multiple boards asking why .mts files from Panasonic P2 and AVCHD cameras are not playing smoothly in Premiere CS 5.5 sequences. I have yet to find an answer, so here we go.

System Specs – Win 7, dual AMD Opteron 2.3Ghz Processors, 32 Gb RAM, NVIDIA Quadro 4000 video card, plenty of space on both the operating and work array (solid state) drives.

In Premiere, the Mercury playback GPU acceleration is on.

My project settings match my footage (drag clip onto new sequence icon, etc.)

    Monitor settings are to full.

    Software is up to date.

Other file types (.mov, .avi, .mp4) all play flawlessly. It is just the .mts files that gag (video is VERY jerky, audio plays fine) in the sequence. They play fine in the preview monitor.

My system was built to scream….and it does…..with file types other than .mts. I am sure I am missing a setting somewhere, but where?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! This is VERY frustrating! Thanks in advance!

That’s strange. What happens when you turn off GPU acceleration?

Is is slightly slower. It plays fine for a clip or 2, but then bogs down. If I stop it and restart it in the timeline, it plays fine briefly and then bogs down.

Do you have Premiere Pro CS5 on the same computer? If so, try relocating the Media Cache files for CS5.5 in a different place than the ones stored for CS5. Preferences > Media

Tried it and no change. Even though 26 of my 32Gb of RAM is dedicated to Premiere, it still bogs down with the .mts files. Still bogs down if I dedicate the max (29Gb).

I also noticed that the files are choppy when I play them outside of Premiere. I updated my video card driver, but it is still jerky.

After researching this online, I am seeing many, many people with the same problem and NO solution. This is strange considering the popularity of both Panasonic and Sony.

    Any ideas?

I also notice that the yellow bar is always above the footage in the sequence, even when I create the sequence to match the footage. Am I missing something somewhere?
