Most folks use the effect, Ramp. That layer with Ramp needs to be precomposed (Layer>Precompose) to make the displacement map work.

On the main AE page, here:

Click on Aharon’s head and scroll down to almost the bottom (long scroll, lots of tuts by Aharon) to find his three part tutorials on displacement maps, and all things displacement will be explained… in detail.

Here are the ‘gotchas’ that I’m aware of for displacement maps:

    1) Make sure that you have the displacement map effect linked to the correct layer.

    2) Make sure that if your solid has effects applied, it is pre-composed (with all effects inside the pre-comp) so that the effects are forced to render BEFORE the displacement map effect tries to access the solid.

in the timline comp ive made 1 layer white solid scaled it down applied a fast blur so its a rectangle in shape, moved its position horizontal on x axis….this going to be the displacement map and do i place the displacement map on the flag or on the solid …..

do i precompose the white solid now …..

then add the flag to timeline comp

i tried to see the tutorials on the podcast unknown file type

You must pre-compose the white solid and be sure to ‘move all attributes.’ Then apply the displacement map effect to the flag layer.
