  • Trouble importing HDV footage from my Sony HVR Z7U into FCP

Posted by Gary Boland on August 25, 2011 at 6:48 pm

The video was shot in1080i 30p on mini DV. With my Sony HVR Z7U I can only import the video into FCP as a NTSC 720×480 signal. It looks great but not in HDV?

I believe I have tried most every setting in my FCP audio video settings to import the HD footage into FCP. FCP seems to only recognize the camcorder in the NTSC mode.

Example – In FCP Audio /Video Settings

Sequence Preset – DVC PRO HD 1080p 30
Capture Preset – DVC PRO HD 1080p 48K
Device Control – Sony HDV FireWire
Video Playback – Only give NTSC choices (I chose Apple FireWire)

FCP does not recognize my camera in Log and Capture mode with the settings above.

FCP will only log the footage when the Capture and Device Control Presets are set to a NTSC format. Hence an NTSC 720×480 signal is imported. Not HDV?

Come on, I know this a common problem and I must be missing something very simple. Please Help! Many thanks.

You have several issues in your post above, but the one that’s making your import SD not HD is a menu setting in the camera itself. It’s set for down-convert. You need to find the I-Link setting in the camera menu that controls this and turn it off. The manual is often helpful for this stuff…

Next, you included the following settings above:

Sequence Preset – DVC PRO HD 1080p 30
Capture Preset – DVC PRO HD 1080p 48K
Device Control – Sony HDV FireWire
Video Playback – Only give NTSC choices (I chose Apple FireWire)

DVCProHD is shot by Panasonic cameras, it has nothing whatsoever to do with HDV from a Sony camera. Your camera shoots HDV and you must always set that as the proper Easy Setup at the very start of a project in FCP.

BUT… changing the camera menu as I wrote above is the #1 thing you need to fix so the the camera isn’t down-converting to DV at 4×3.

Without a camera here in front of me I’m not going to be able to help you find that one menu setting among the multitude of other menu settings. The manual is your best bet, but going to the HDV Forum is a good idea… Here’s the link:

FCP is designed to edit ProRes format. If you want to import videos in other formats to FCP for editing, we can use Log and Capture (or Transfer) to recognise video.

If the L&T plugin can’t work well with camcorder, you’d better download and install a top converter to reformat video to ProRes with Audio /Video Settings, thus you can freely take and edit your HD video with FCP.
