Trimming capabilities
Posted by Steven Sanders on July 23, 2011 at 12:09 pmAs a long time mc and fcp editor of fiction, I’ve recently taken a look at premiere 5.5. I was however surprised at the lack of strong trimming capabilities within the trim window. Often I’m working with clips that contain 4 or even 8 audiotracks. In avid it is quite easy to select the tracks you want to trim and then use the trimwindow to do so, using only the keyboard. Fcp had an editselectiontool. What does premiere have? Is this going to be adressed in the future? Right now trimming seems kind of clunky and inferior to the way avid and fcp handles it.

July 23, 2011 at 1:28 pmYou´re right – trimming is not really the same like in MC or FCP. From my point of view the MC trimmer is still the best. Adobe has to work on that feature (please write a feature request on the Adobe website :-)).
Being a MC and FCP Editor we also have to learn to work without selectable editpoints in the timeline. They need to fix that, too! It helps a lot to keep control.
But some trimming processes in PPro are nice anyway. They don´t have that +/- 1 frame button as we know it from FCP on the keyboard but you can have a “similar” effect with alt (or CMD, can´t remember that) and arrow left/right.
Things are different in some ways but if you get used to them they work out fine. I feel like the time when I learned FCP (coming from Avid). There were so many things being so different from MC that really drove me nuts…but in the end it was nice working with it. Same in PPro from my experience yet. No question, there are a couple of things that should be improved in PPro, but Adobe seems to listen (again: send requests). We will see if they really listen in PPro6.Greetings

July 23, 2011 at 1:51 pmSteven, please read this thread where I express similar thoughts to yours about the Trim Window.
https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/3/913934
(Please paste above into browser)
Adobe is listening and makes changes based on input . Please fill out the feature request form here…
https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
and request the Trim Window be given the ability to scrub audio and use dynamic trimming using the J-K-L keys (like Avid and FCP). The more customers that request a feature, the better the chance for it being implemented.

July 23, 2011 at 4:49 pmWe can’t comment on details of future versions of the software, but I can say with certainty that we are currently working on improving this area of the application based on this sort of feedback. Keep those feature requests coming.
In the meantime… Kevin Monahan has explained some lesser-known trimming features here, and Karl Soule has some tips on using the Trim Monitor in this video

July 23, 2011 at 5:06 pmYes, I have read both articles. Very helpful ways to deal with the Trim Windows current limitations. Ive even come up with my own workarounds that get the job done. But I strive to enhance PrP’s capabilities in order to make great software even better.

July 23, 2011 at 6:07 pmThank you very much for the replies kind folk. I will most certainly fill in the request form. The adobe package would be perfect for me if i could only trim any number of tracks i desire without ever having to touch the mouse. Some people may think differently, but i feel that the keyboard is still the fastest tool for accurate editing. Watching somebody who masters all the shortcuts is a beautiful sight indeed 😉
