  • Trimming a jpg to hide some movement

Posted by Brian Thomas on August 2, 2018 at 4:38 pm

Over to the right of my footage someone briefly moved into view. I want to hide that mistake so I ‘Shared’ the frame just before and dragged the jpg into the same place. Now I want to Trim most of the left of the jpg frame so that the action continues and no one sees what happened.

For the jpg image, within ‘Crop’ I selected ‘Trim’ and moved the ‘Left’ slider as far as I could but it only let me get rid of half the image – not enough as the action is all over the centre of the screen.

In the end I’ve found that by selecting ‘Crop’ instead of ‘Trim’, with a value for Left of 1126 and a ‘Scale (All)’ of 12% and repositioning the jpg over to the right of the frame I get the effect I’m looking for.

All crazily complicated and imprecise. Why can’t I simply Trim most of the left part of a jpg image? Why does the Left slider stop in the middle? Is there a simpler and more precise way of getting rid of the brief action over to the right?

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

    Use the Draw Mask effect.

I would use a duplicate of the shot instead of a jpeg and mask like Michael suggested slipping the coverage shot earlier so it will cover the person you want to cover. This has the benefit of showing moving footage instead of a still because moving footage looks different from a still even if the camera is locked off and nothing is “moving” in the shot.

However, to answer your question, you can trim and crop photos in a number of ways and using the sliders is the least precise (read: worst) way to do it. The easiest is to just select the crop tool in the viewer, choose Trim (should be default) and drag the edge you’re trimming until you’re happy. Conversely, if you want to do it in inspector, scrub in the number value beside the slider, don’t use the slider at all.

Many thanks both for your speedy replies. I tried the Draw Mask effect, Michael, experienced difficulties making it work but tried the one next door – Shape Mask – and that took care of my needs very quickly. I’ll have to dig into Draw Mask a bit.

Thanks Andy for the advice about using footage instead of a still but with the low light at that point no one will notice the (now) non-action over to the right of the image.

Slap on the forehead for me when I read your “select the crop tool in the viewer” etc. I knew I had done this before and now I remember how. I’ve ‘removed’ stage hands wandering around in the past and of course that was the way. All happy and grateful now.

All the same, one question remains: why is the slider be restricted to halfway across the image? Just wonderin’
