Trim window
Posted by Oliver Peters on June 22, 2012 at 2:17 pmAny way to keep the trim window in the 2-up mode without holding down the mouse key? I’m trying to trim by keyboard nudging, but really need to see a 2-up for comparison.

June 22, 2012 at 2:50 pmNope. Unfortunately the only way to see the 2-up display is by using the mouse. Hopefully this will be addressed; I’ve offered them this feedback often enough. My best suggestion is to use the precision editor and zoom in on the edit point so that using the mouse will adjust by single frames.

That’s what I figured. Complex trimming is a really weak part of the application. I’m doing a second larger project and it’s all dialogue edits. I almost never make straight a/v cuts with dialogue – all J and L cuts. Lots of extra steps to do that in X. Certainly doable, but twice as much work as in other NLEs. Much easier in 7 and definitely in MC and now also in PP6. Really miss a good 2-up trim window like in MC for properly matching action.

June 22, 2012 at 11:13 pmThis is one of my peeves. I can live without the viewer (coming to future update) but the two up with mouse only is actually a holdover from FCP legacy. In it’s entire history they never improved that.

True, but at least you had a separate trim window designed to appease Avid editors.

June 22, 2012 at 11:17 pmYou can trim with keyboard shortcuts in the 2-up window in FCP7. I’m doing it right now.

June 22, 2012 at 11:22 pmThis is news to me. Was this something that was added in 7? Maybe I gave up trying after 6. This is not something I think I’d miss otherwise because I often did timeline trimming and cussed a blue streak over this. I spend 12 years on Avid before moving to FCP and Avid circa 2000 still had better trimming features than FCP 2009.

And what a clunky implementation it was. I was in that trim window all the time in Avid. FCP legacy was a real kludge in that area. I tried using a few times and didn’t find it very useful.

June 22, 2012 at 11:33 pmI see. You’re talking about the 2-up window you get from using something like the roll tool and I was referring to the trim window. I really never paid much attention to the roll tool’s 2-up display because I only use the roll tool for rough trims. When I need to be exact, I use the trim window.
It’s nowhere near as good as the Avid trim window (and Premiere looks like maybe the best implementation), but it works fine.

Yes, the two up window that didn’t two up when using the keyboard. As opposed to the awful trim window which made me cry for Avid as much as I otherwise preferred FCP. True the trim window worked for simpler trims. It was frustrating the FCP didn’t “commit” to improving one or the other.
Given FCPX has no trim window I’d hope they’d make time line trimming work better like improve the decade long lack of two up with keyboard trimming.

Apple’s announced dual-viewer feature for the next update has been promoted by them as being more than just source/record windows. I would hope that one of the improvements would include trimming as part of how these would work.
