Trim and Slip of Events
Hi, I have been examining some of the various trim and slip procedures in GREAT DETAIL, I understand what they all do, however I do not know WHY I would use some of them! Perhaps somebody can explain this. OK
BASIC TRIM – This I understand, use it all the time, no problem.
SLIP TRIM – This I understand, do not know WHY I would ever use it, Ok, it preserves the beginning or end as you trim, but essentially, it’s just trimming from THE OTHER SIDE anyway! So why not just TRIM from the other side, which is more precise, which is what I do anyway! Hmmmmmm!!
STRETCH – This I understand, this could be useful.
SLIP – This I understand, this could be very useful to offset the clip to fit the event window or some such thing or adjust it more precisely.
TRIM ADJACENT – I cannot figure out exactly why I would use this. As far as I can tell, it essentially moves the boundary between two events (adding to the end of one event the same amount that is removed from the beginning of the other or vice versa) exactly like a slip crossfade so why isn’t it called SLIP ADJACENT?)
SLIDE: This I understand, but it’s really another way of doing a slip, why would I use this instead of a SLIP or vice versa?
SLIDE CROSSFADE: I understand what this does but am uncertain of WHEN I would use it!
IT seems to me that most of these are to FIX a problem inadvertently caused by some other operation (i.e. a sloppy ripple operation)! or for MICRO FRAME ADJUSTMENTS? If If I select two events and put them on the timeline, why would I want to SHIFT/MOVE their boundaries or crossfades? (Now I AM a beginning editor!)
As specific as possible would be appreciated! Can you give real life practical reasons where these would be necessary.
