Posted by Julian Sixx on May 28, 2006 at 3:51 pm

    Hi
I’ve created a lawn with trapcode particular and a soccerball with invigorator.
I would like to put this 2 object into one 3d scene!
Trying to put them together then the soccerball loses its 3d dimension!
The soccerball should roll on the lawn.Is that possible to achieve with AE???
    Thx for your time

Dunno ’bout Invigorator, since I don’t use it, but presumably you should leave the two elements in separate compositions and merge them in a third one. I believe the trick would be to sync the cameras in each composition to maintain the correct viewing angel and thus the illusion of 3D. All that may be required as an extra step should be some imaginative use of each layer as a matte if need be.

    Hi,

1-Precompose your lawn layer, assign it as a layer map.
2-Create a plane in Invigorator and use your layer map as a texture.
3-Assign your plane to a different set to animate both the ball & plane individualy.

This way you would have a perfect interaction of both objects (Shadows, camera etc…)

    Salut.

Yeah, but Serge, wouldn’t the grass be flat?

    Hey Justin,

The grass would always be flat in AE. The most important is to avoid a frontal camera perspective. Best would be a top view.

Here is an example that goes in between:

I didn’t care about creating a good-looking grass or animation so bear with me.

    Salut.

    Hi Serge

When i use the lawn as a layer map for a plane it looks really flat, like somebody walked on it:).
Does your lawn include a camera?Which view?
Your Ball really looks as if it’s on the grass:).

Here, I did a little animation this morning.

Sorry if it’s about 5 Mo. Took me an hour to do. I took a little grass sample from Particle Illusion (with Alpha, TGA sequence), took it back into AE, made a big grass square with it (thx Mylenium), made a Null Layer (turned on the 3D Switch), parented it with the grass square, putted a camera, and used the Null as the controller for my soccer ball 3D object. Assigned the Set 1 to the Null, and made Set 2 the soccer ball itself, and played with rotations and Z position. If you have 6.5, e-mail me, I could send you my project file.

    Hope that helped.

[Justin Productions] “made a big grass square with it”

    Using Trapcode Particular, of course.

[Justin Productions] “Assigned the Set 1”

    In Zaxwerks Invigorator.

    Just precisions 🙂

    Hey,

I am not familiar with particular but from what I have seen, it also uses the AE camera. Therefore, there is no need to create the plane in Invigorator as I previously suggested as both plug-ins can share the ae camera without any conflict.

To get the ball look as it is partly in the grass, all you need to do once you are done with your camera animation is to duplicate your Particular layer, precomp it, copy your animated camera and paste it inside of your precomp. This step will ensure that your duplicate would be sync.

Now, move the precomp in your timeline so you sandwich your ball with grass and draw a feathered mask on the precomp to eliminate the grass from the top part of your ball and animate this mask to follow the ball.

    Salut.
