I’ve created a lower 3rd in motion and am looking to have the right edge of the bar gradually fade out. Edge feathering just gives me some transparency, but not enough. I tried creating a white to transparent gradient in photoshop, then keying out the white, but that didn’t work either. Surely there is an easier way to do this…?

Draw a mask on the edge and add some feather

that works ok, but you still get sharp edges vs. the graduatal gradient fade out like I’m looking for. I suppose you could do it with lots of mask points, but surely there is an easier way to do it as I see motion lower 3rd on TV all the time with gradient fades on their outer edges.

    Howdy,

All you need is a gradient generator and an image mask. A smooth (and highly configurable) black-to-white gradient provides a smooth fall-off source for an image mask on your lower third. Here’s some steps (used with text, but your situation is the same):

P.S. And don’t forget, you can make the gradient generator into any size you want and set the gradient points in any direction you want. You can even mask the generator to customize its shape before you use it as the source for the image mask.
