Theo, all I can say is that whenever I get a graphic, I make sure it has a transparent background (in Photoshop) and save it as a PNG.
I then bring it into Vegas and drop it on the timeline.
Nothing special like selecting straight or premultiplied needs to be done to it as it just works.
Why it works for me and not for Jason will forever remain a mystery 🙂

I may have misread something, but it sounded like the problem was mainly cropping up when images were saved to JPG (with no alpha layer possible)… If there were problems with PNG, it is possible in PNG to suppress or save without an alpha layer… at least I know that can be done fairly easily in PSP or Painter… I don’t use Photoshop as often as many do, though I’m sure it’s possible to do many strange things to an alpha layer there as well.

Here you find more on straight and premultiplied alpha channels in photoshop:

    Hey jason,

I see this is a fairly outdated topic but I’ll still give it a go.

The solution is fairly simple without messing around with alpha channels.

Once you choose file > save as in photoshop (CS2 or higher), you -obviously- select the PNG extension. After you did this it will ask to save as none or interlaced. If you choose interlaced it will remember the transparent layer in its final composition.

Now simply import the image to Vegas and drag it to the timeline and voila! But this trick gets more complicated when working in HD, you will have to work with a higher resolution in PS.

    hope it works! happy editting!

    cheers,
    Jermaine
