Been trying to import animated gif from photoshop cs3 into after effects with a transparent background and all attempts have failed

it seems so simple to everybody but me, ive tried everything and the background is always white

i can get a .psd file to show with transparent background but the animation goes wild (changes scale, shows at many place at the same time…)

these are the things i already do:

i click on the toggle transparency grid in after effect

i save in web and peripherics in photoshop

i save my images with no background

    so im out of ideas

I know this is not what you are asking, but…

…why don’t you just export the psd images and import them to AE, using them as a pre-comp.

GIF images will reduce your colors and, later, if you need to do an adjustment in the animation speed it will be way more complicated than if you manage all the animation inside After Effects.

Sorry, could you be more specific? I have the same problem. I need to import a gif into after effects with its transparency intact. I dont have photoshop, and Preview (Mac default viewing program) doesn’t seem to save the file with alpha when I try to convert it to png, tiff, or targa. Anyone help?

    Thanks

Eh, now I’m confused, is an alpha channel and transparency not the same thing? If not how do I convert gif transparency to an alpha channel?

    Thanks

    hi,

You can eliminate the white background using the “Color Key” feature in AE

go to effect> (mask?) > color key then use the (thing) and click on the background image

my copy is in french so it might not be mask but i think it is

No, my images is just black and white, colour keying would do the same as using modes. But the gif file has the center opaque but the outside transparent. So if I were to colour key, the inside would become transparent as well.

Why not just go to Effects>Keying>Color Key and then use the eye dropper to key out the color you want to be transparent?
