I’m puzzled as to how transitions work in this particular case.

I have two clips: one on v1 and the other on v2 and I am trying to place a “cross dissolve” video transition in.

The first one between v1 and v2 worked a charm… drag and dropped it onto the end of the clip (in v2) and it extended over to beginning of the v1 clip. However, at the end of the clip, where I then bring in v2 again, I go through the same exercise of clicking the ‘effects’ tab and then dragging and dropping the transition onto either v1 OR v2 and it shows that it simply wants to stay purely on that clip and not extend over to create a seamless linking.

is it time to re-dye my blond highlights again or is this a conundrum? Please help…

First off, in FCP you can do transitions on a single video track, no need to overlap the tracks if you don’t want to.

[Lawrence Eaton] “However, at the end of the clip, where I then bring in v2 again, I go through the same exercise of clicking the ‘effects’ tab and then dragging and dropping the transition onto either v1 OR v2 and it shows that it simply wants to stay purely on that clip and not extend over to create a seamless linking. “

If the case of overlapping video tracks, you would have to apply the Dissolve to V2 since that is above V1. FCP displays video in order of the tracks with the top most track having priority. So if you’re trying to dissolve on a shot from V2, you must apply the transition to V2.

Also, you have to make sure you have enough handles on V2 to allow the transition you want.
