  • Transferring XDCAM files from PDW-700 via Ethernet

    Hi

I posted about this subject a couple of weeks ago but didn’t get any replies. So here goes again…

Has any one had any success transferring files from a PDW-700 XDCAM camera to a computer via Ethernet? I found it really easy with Firewire but my new computer doesn’t have it and I’m struggling with the Ethernet method.

I’ve copied files using Filezilla (an FTP program from the makers of Netscape) but only with a workaround. I’d love to be able to import using Vegas Pro 11 but can’t achieve more than a message stating “The XDCAM disc import process failed”. Which means I can’t edit with the proxies and then conform to the HD files…
The camera has the Ethernet mode enabled and has “Network” in the viewfinder indicating it’s connected to the computer.
But I get a message saying that there are too many users connected even though I’m the only one. Mozilla has this to say about it…
******If you get a “421 Too many connections from this IP error”, the FTP server is restricting your number of connections. There are even servers restricting it to one connection at a time.
The preferred solution would be to contact the server administrator and encourage him/her to configure the server correctly (FTP uses more than one connection by design!).******

I’ve looked at all the menus on the camera but can’t find one dealing with restricting the number of connections, even on the “Network” pages. Someone suggested I try a Cat5 Crossover cable rather than the “straight” cable but that made no difference either.

After spending many hours on this I’m feeling very frustrated that I can’t sort it out. I bet there’s just one setting somewhere that needs to be changed and it’ll work fine… But what is it??!!

    cheers

If this unit is directly connected to a computer
running Windows Vista with a network cable,
      change the setting as follows:
      (1) Open “Network and Sharing Center” >“Manage
      network connections” >“Local Area Connection”
in the control panel. (2) In the “Local Area
      Connection Properties”, uncheck the “Internet
Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)”, and then click the
      OK button.

According to the manual this unit does not like IPv6 and Windows 7 has that on by default. You can usually turn that off as almost everyone still uses IPv4. You can uncheck that in the Network control panel for your Local Area Connection. Make sure you keep the IPv4 checked though. I would not hook the cable between the camera and the computer, since you now have to manage the IP address assignment. If you can plug the camera into a switch or wireless router that supports DHCP, then you do not have to manage the IP addresses. You do have to figure out what address the camera was assigned. In Sony Vegas in the XDCAM Explorer, you need to provide the IP address and the username and password for the FTP transfer. If this sounds complicated, you might find it more worthwhile to add a firewire port to your system.

      Hi Mark

      Thanks for your reply.
I’ve already got the IPv6 boxed unchecked and the IPv4 box checked.

“In Sony Vegas in the XDCAM Explorer, you need to provide the IP address and the username and password for the FTP transfer.” Yep, done all that too.

I just tried connecting through my wireless router but can’t even see the camera on it… Maybe my router doesn’t support DHCP.

As I mentioned in my original post, I can transfer files from the camera to the computer via FTP but only by using a workaround. So I’m not sure that using a router is the answer… I’ll get one that can manage DHCP and see if that works.

      thanks again

Looks like I replied too soon. I just pressed the Import Disc button in Vegas and it started working.

      Thanks Mark, you’re a genius!!

      Hello Guys,

I am with a similar problem I think.

What do you guys think is it possible to do so with Edius 6.5 this ethernet trick too?

I just use internet explorer and get the thumbnail but did not get file by FTP.
      Only HTTP supports.
