  • Transferring MXF 24p Footage Into FCP

As a Producer, I use FC to offline and create EDL’s for the on line edit bay (doing my part to keep editors employed! 🙂

I have MXF flies shot on a Panasonic HDX2700 in 24p format. I think the resolution is 1280 x 720. Eventual airing will be for standard 4×3 viewing.

Before I begin logging and transferring this material into FC, I have two questions I hope are not too involved for someone to respond without taking too much of your time.

Both questions concern themselves with making sure I am building an integral EDL that my on line editor can upload and simply re transfer from the original MXF files. I just want to make sure my EDL numbers ultimately match his on line version.

1- Does it matter which “Sequence Preset” I use when logging and transferring the media? I experimented with six or eight and they all “look” fine for me to do my part visually.

2- After searching first for these answers, I ran across a posting that alerted me to something about FC converting 24p to a 29.97 time line. Does this really apply to me if I’m only off lining? Will it impact an EDL and cause issues with an on line edit session trying to match those edits?

One more thing (oops, I’m cheating.) I specifically shot in 24p to soften and create a reasonable “film look.” I thought once it’s shot, the “look” is married to tape. Did I interpret the other article incorrectly that this look can be altered back to standard-looking video if don’t set up the transfers correctly or “reverse tele-cini” or something like that?

Thank you so very much in advance for your support.

[Mark Fanjoy] “I am building an integral EDL that my on line editor can upload and simply re transfer from the original MXF files.”

Note that you can only import the FULL files…or manually mark IN and OUT then import. You as a producer cannot import the files, make an EDL and then your editor only import what you have in that EDL…unless they do it all manually. So bear that in mind.

[Mark Fanjoy] “1- Does it matter which “Sequence Preset” I use when logging and transferring the media?”

No. P2 DVCPRO HD only imports as full resolution DVCPRO HD. So choosing any sequence preset nor any EASY SETUP will not change a thing. But make sure you have the proper Easy Setup so that what you drop your footage into it things will match.

    Depends. What format did you shoot? 720p 24p? 720p 24PN? 1080i24? 1080i 24PA? 720p24 is actually 60fps running at 59.94…with the 24p look. 720p 24PN is 23.98…24 actual frames per second. 1080i24 is 29.97, and 1080i 24PA is 29.97, but with pulldown will get you to 23.98.

[Mark Fanjoy] “I thought once it’s shot, the “look” is married to tape.”

It is…once you shoot 24p, you have the 24p look.

Nope…no going back to the regular video look once you shoot 24p. 24 images were recorded over 30 frames. Depending on how it was shot you can extract the 24frames (24PA mode) to get 23.98. You can lay back to tape at 29.97…with a good capture card…but it will still have the film look.

Shane, thank you for the input. VERY helpful.

Regarding your question as to what format for the sake of knowing if my timeline configuration will affect my on line editor’s process, we shot in 720pn 23.98 AVC Intra100.

I hope this is enough information for your response.

    Thank you again!
