  • Transferring files to HVR-DR60 then into FCP

Posted by Stewart Stroup on November 8, 2010 at 9:39 pm

On a recent shoot I filled my Sony HVR-D60 with DVcam files so I down loaded the entire folder to an external hard drive in order to erase the files and continue shooting. Now, I’d like to get the files from the external hard drive into Final Cut Pro for editing, but Log and Transfer does not recognize the file type. I can convert them to DVCPRO/DV in Compressor, but this seems like an awkward workflow. Is there a way to drag these files back onto the HVR-60 so that I can use the Log and Transfer feature of FCP to bring them into the Browser?

    Any help will be appreciated.

You don’t need to load them through log and transfer at all. Just import them. They are DV or DVCAM files, right? That means they should be ready to go just as they are. file/import/files… or folders full, and edit away.

Thanks for your suggestion. I solved the problem by dragging all the video files to the video partition of the HVR-DR60. The trick, evidently, is to maintain the file structure when you copy to an external disk and when you copy back to the HVR-DR60. Once I go the files onto the Sony disk, I was able to bring them into final cut using the Log and Transfer menu item. Just over four hours of material transferred into FCP in just over one hour. I think importing might have taken longer, but I haven’t done the test to see if that’s true.

    Thanks for helping.

Similar issue, only that I don’t own the DVR DR60. The files were transfered in the field to a hard drive by the cameraman. Now I can’t access them either by log and transfer or import. I already installed the Sony plug in, but no change. Any suggestions or workable workflow?

    Thanks

A couple of questions–can you open the files in QuickTime? are they .mov files or some other flavor? have you tried just importing the files?

I can’t import them, they are gray out.
