We have a BTS ‘BCB-75’ deck and a load of tapes that we need to archive to Quicktime files. My problem is that no signal seems to be coming from the deck to my transcoder. I remember having this problem once before, and I believe I had to run the signal through a distribution amplifier (which I no longer have). Is there another method, or will I have to acquire a DA again?

What encoder are you using and how are you connected?

Using a DataVideo DAC-100 with composite connection.

    Aarrggh.

Beautiful BetaSP being murdered by this device through composite. BetaSP deserves component.
But anyway – it’s a budget device, don’t expect much from it.

    Shame on you!
This is a broadcast forum but dealing with this kind of setup automatically takes you out of the broadcast space as the quality will be shot to pieces

Yep..unfortunately though, this seems to be the only forum on CC that deals with broadcast level equipment…so I thought I would get an answer here. Apparently not. Oh well, guess I’ll have to hunt down the engineer who helped me with this problem last time.

Are there any other forums online where broadcast engineers might hang out?

Not sure how many tapes you have but aja lo converters are showing up on ebay pretty cheap these days. You could probably buy one and sell it afterward and pretty well get your money back. The aja would solve your balanced audio problems too. Your current converter converts everything to DV while the aja would allow you to use a 4:2:2 format via component.

Not sure why you get no signal and what a distribution amp would do for you. Is the terminator switch on? Does the composite feed a picture to a monitor?

Hmmm…what may even be a better solution is to purchase a Blackmagic Decklink card.
