  • Transcoding Red footage in FCP 7

    Hello there,

I have a query with transcoding some footage shot on Red …

Using FCPs Log and Transfer, I’ve transcoded some Red footage (shot at 4K HD – 3840×2160) to ProRes 422, which comes out as 1920×1080 frame size. I wanted to know why it comes out as this size, as when I transcode footage shot at 2048x 1080 it comes out as 2048×1080. Why can’t I have a ProRes 3840×2160?

Maybe it has something to do with aspect ratio, as the 4K HD is 16:9 and 2x 1920 in both dimensions, whereas the 2K frame size is slightly wider. Or am I completely on the wrong tracks? Or is it something to do with the maximum res playback in the timeline, perhaps?

I must be missing something, but I don’t know what. I just don’t understand.

    Can anyone help?

    Hi Phil,
I have no experience with RED footage, but what I can tell you for sure is that FC do not support video bigger than 2K.

    Thanks for your reply, Rafael.

I would’ve thought that as that is the case, I could’ve transcoded to the closest possible resolution – being 2k if that is the maximum supported. I suppose its less processor intensive to transcode to multiples of 4k HD, which would result in 1920×1080.

If anyone can confirm this, or has any other ideas, I’d love to hear.

    Many thanks.
