    Hello all,

First, just a little info on my current workflow. I’m working in a 1080p/23.976 project, we ingest everything at DNxHD 115, then upon final approval we are transcoding the final sequence to DNxHD 175 since it is more of an ‘online’ quality resolution. Some footage we can see a difference, and some not so much.

My question is – how does AVID perform this transcode. Is it just a digital “up res”? I don’t understand how AVID turns footage brought in at 115 and turns it into 175 without ever ‘seeing’ anything higher than 115.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

It doesn’t. You’re basically just taking up more space on your drives. You may be seeing a slight improvement if 115 is 8-bit and 175 is 10-bit (you won’t see so much banding in gradients, for example), but otherwise Avid can’t put back quality that isn’t there.

The right way to do it would be to cut at 115, lock your edit, decompose, then recapture at 175. What’s your source material?

    Hey Michael,

Thanks for the input and advice. One job was DVCPRO HD, and another was a mix of Canon HDV and RED cam.

The end product was for web, so I don’t think it’s going to be noticeable anyway.

Wow, I’ve wasted a LOT of drive space.
