Been using Avids for years but I’m new to Adrenaline HD (aren’t we all?). So here’s my question: What the heckin’ hoohaw is Transcoding? Tech Support don’t know. Tech Support’s supervisors barely know.

Maybe I’m looking at it wrong – here’s my workflow:
1.) HD footage on Panasonic DVCProHD gets captured into our WinXP Adrenaline HD v2.0.2.
*note that capture settings do not allow for DVCProHD as a selectable source, so I chose DNxHD 145*
    2.) Edit
3.) At this point, I try to perform a digital cut, but the Adrenaline demands that I transcode the sequence first. Fine. After 3 hours of failed transcodings and 3 very frustrated Avid Tech Support folks, I just crash recorded it back to tape. (You guessed it – it looks just fine.)

    So what/why/huh is Transcoding?

Go to clip/transcode (it’s grouped with consolidate). Turns this footage into that footage. If I have DV 25 footage, I can transcode it to 15:1s.

DVCPRO can only be capture natively over FIreWire connected to a third party FireWire card in your CPU. At that point you can work in native DVCPRO. When capturing over HD-SDI, the deck decompresses the stream to an uncompressed HD signal which then gets captured in the DNxHD format of your choosing.

Adrenaline will then play back SD, HD, etc, in real time when in gre/yellow mode (real timne preview) but when performing a digital cut, needs to be of all one format (SD rendered as HD, etc.) Transcoding is the process of taking one format and converting to another.

I think I understand most of that, but I’m still confused about one thing:
It looked fine crash recorded onto tape – NOT transcoded… is there something to do with resolution/bit rate/etc. that I’m just not seeing? Or is this just a pickiness factor on the Digital Cut Tool’s part?

Keep in mind that all my footage was the same – DVCProHD – no intermingling of footage resolutions.

Were you trying to go back to the DVPRO HD deck over FireWire or over HD-SDI?

Aside from the transcoding confusion listed above, it was.. OK. You know how nicely responsive the jkl keys are on the Media composers (for quickly playing/reversing/pausing)? Well, not so smooth here. Somewhat sluggish and sloppy, kinda like an Xpress. For now though, I’m going to account most of the errors I’m seeing to my own lack of time on the system. Hell, I’ve still got crap in the WinXP system tray that needs gutting. But that said, I’m seeing some project corruptions (in 1080i 59.94)… but no crashes yet. No render issues either, but it’s only v2.0.2 of the software.

He he, this is the funny part. I’ve got https://www.avid.com/products/mediaDockUltra320/. They’re damn reliable… just a s Avid says… but yopu’ve gotta get them into a soundproof rack or another room. Lets just say, it’s a symphony of ShopVacs.
